Everyone and their dog knows the history behind 420 by now. The history behind 420 is one of the most widely spread pieces of stoner lore, so much so that even people who do not partake know what it means.
This is why I’m not here to talk about 420 today. Instead I am here to talk about July 10th, aka 710.
For those who are not aware, while 420 is the day devoted to all things related to smoking weed, 710 is the day that is devoted to dabbing.
If you hadn’t noticed 710 upside down spells out “oil” referring of course to concentrates such as butane honey oil, aka BHO, wax, shatter, budder, etc.

History Behind 710
Unlike the history behind 420, no one really seems to know the history behind 710.
People just began talking about it one year, around the time that dabbing began to really take off.
As a matter of fact 710 didn’t even appear anywhere online until it made Urban Dictionary back in 2011.
Even then, there was only a short and rather vague definition of the term. There was certainly no mention of the history of the term.
This is probably because the history of 710 is one of the biggest mysteries of the stoner community, if not one of the biggest mysteries on the internet.

If you google “history of 710” you’ll get two different results: articles speculating on the history behind the term and articles about the 710 aka the San Diego freeway.
As such, I had to dig pretty deep to find anything on the history of 710.
The best I could find was an interview in Leaf Online from 2015 with the musician Taskrok who says that he came up with the idea for 710 with his friends because felt no affinity to 420 anymore.
He does not want to claim ownership for the term and says that it “belongs to the community now”.
Taskrok has also devoted an entire album to the art of dabbing, entitled “the Movement”. The album of course contains many songs dedicated to the joys of doing dabs.
Whether this is the actual story behind the 710 holiday, we may never know.
One thing about the stoner world is that we love to collectivize things. The holiday dedicated to all things dabbing belongs to all of us. Have a happy 710 everyone!
