Signs your Cannabis Plants Have Bud or Root Rot

Rot is usually the death knell for your cannabis plants, especially if you don’t catch it on time. So, what are the telltale signs you should look for?

How can you tell that your cannabis plants are rotting? Do you know the difference between bud rot or root rot.

Bud Rot vs Root Rot?

There are two main types of rotting that you need to be on the lookout for: bud rot and root rot. The difference between the two is pretty self explanatory.

One takes place in the roots and the other takes place in the buds themselves. We’ll look at the signs of rotting in each type.

What is Root Rot?

Root rot is a fungus that manifests itself in the roots of your plant, typically after your plant is already severely weakened due to stress and other adverse environmental factors, such as disease and lack of proper nutrients. 

Root rot is especially dangerous to your plants because it grows extremely fast and the rot spreads through the spores in the roots, which as you can imagine is very difficult to see. Spores are after all, microscopic.

Signs of Root Rot

Root rot is incredibly difficult to spot because it is so small. If you know what you’re looking for, you can easily find it.

It’s all about the smell. If you’re familiar with the smell of mildew, then you should easily be able to identify it.

If you’re not familiar with the smell of mildew, then go smell your shower curtain. The roots will also be colored brown, as opposed to the whiteish cream color that you’re used to in leaves.

Signs of Bud Rot

Bud rot is different from root rot in that it spreads through the buds rather than the roots. It develops in the core of the buds, starting from the stem and growing outwards.

It grows incredibly fast and is exceedingly difficult to get rid of. It’s much more difficult to find than root rot.

This means that it’s much more difficult to get rid of. The discoloration will spread throughout the leaves. At first the rot looks white, then it turns from grey to black.

Bud rot most commonly happens because of other things.

For example, your plants could be lacking in nutrients. Another thing to consider is whether the temperature you’re growing in is right.

If you think that your plants are rotting, then there are a couple things you need to do right away.

First of all, you need to remove the affected plants from the healthy ones.

Bud rot spreads quickly and you obviously don’t want it to reach your other plants. Next, remove the affected area, if you’re plants are not too far gone.

Luckily, with a bit of vigilance, you can prevent your plants from rotting.
